Anemone Rüger, born near Chemnitz in 1974, works in the field of public relations and project management and has been dealing intensively with German-Jewish history and present for 20 years; in recent years the Polish dimension has been added. After studying interpreting at the University of Heidelberg and spending a year abroad in Israel and Ukraine, she worked for 15 years at the U.S. military bases in Hanau and Wiesbaden, where she was head of public affairs for 11 years. She is currently setting up a project for needy Holocaust survivors in Ukraine. She also works as an interpreter and author. For this book, she studied thousands of archival documents and compiled the stories of numerous survivors in Israel, as well as the Jewish history of their Polish hometowns. For seven years, Anemone Rueger delved into the mystery of her grandfather, which had risen to the surface in a casual conversation. „There’s NOTHING to tell!“ grandpa had always claimed when asked about his rare last name, Meieranz. „OPAS VERMCHTNIS“ follows Grandpa’s trail – back to a surprising address: Poland. Back to the small town of Aleksandrov, where the Meieranz’s first names were Aron and Fayge and Shimon … The book uses the tense story of a family that has not „always been German“ to show how the third generation unconsciously carries the burdens of the grandfather generation, and how it falls to this grandchild generation to come to terms with the pain and guilt that their grandfathers and grandmothers could not put into words, and to find the pearls of healing and restoration among the thorns of the past.
